Wait, what about Pet Sounds? That came out one year prior to Sgt. Pepper and that featured Carol Kaye playing Brian Wison’s bass lines which at some points, in some songs like “Here Today,” “God Only Knows” and “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times” feel a little more like the main melody. I would say Wilson was the first to strive the bass from the root function.
