February 08, 2006 / Los Angeles, CA Venue: Staples Center Main Set: Vertigo, One Comments: U2 performs at the 48th annual Grammy Awards. The band brings its own light show for ‘Vertigo,’ which features the swirling red designs used during the Vertigo Tour. ‘One’ is performed with Mary J. Blige, and features the Zoo TV tour’s video animations showing the word ‘one’ on the screen in different languages. Later in the ceremony, Edge takes part in an all-star musical tribute to the artists and sounds of New Orleans, performing with the likes of Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, and others. As for the awards, U2 wins all five categories in which its nominated and Steve Lillywhite also wins Producer of the Year.

MARY J BLIGE is just “NASTY” = GREAT singing this song. What energy!!!! WOW!!!
Bono has sort of drag singing style. Its sexy while Mary has a powerful gospel voice which shows strength. Very wonderful together although Mary seems to be overpowering Bono in all. I love both of them. looking forward to next song with her in it.

Mary OWNS this song! I love U2 – but she turned One into something very soulful, very gospel. Check out the official video from MJB for One – they all sound much better than they did live.

Mary allways puts so much energy into it she gives me goosebumps, but the band are playing too slow in this version, constantly trying to pull the tempo down, like they just got out of bed.

Blige brings incredible power to this beautifully written song. She expresses a raw passion that Bono is simply not capable of. Don’t get me wrong, Bono is a great vocalist, but on this particular track, the addition of Mary J. Blige increases it’s impact ten fold. It’s terrific!
